Workshop 16.1: Julie Ryder -Printing with Mordants using Natural Dyes

Print a number of colours on cloth with one dyebath using the centuries old technique of mordant printing. Experiment with a variety of mordants as well as different printing and stamping processes.

Discover the magic of printing with mordants in conjunction with natural dyes. Mordant printing is a centuries old process whereby different colours can be obtained on your cloth from just one natural dyebath. This workshop will focus on several mordants and dyes as well as different printing and stamping processes and is suitable for those wishing to extend beyond immersion dyeing to printing.

Julie Ryder is a textile designer, artist and educator based in Canberra, who has gained international recognition for her work. She has been a practicing textile artist, designer and educator for over 23 years. She exhibits regularly both nationally and internationally. Her work is represented in many public and private collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Powerhouse Museum and the Art Gallery of South Australia.
