Sue Russell: Elements
You're invited to: Elements : NCEATA
Members of the Newcastle Creative Embroiderers and Textile Artists (NCEATA) have chosenElementsas the theme for their exciting and diverse exhibition, which opens at Newcastle’s Timeless Textiles Gallery later this month.
The NCEATA artists’ interpretations of the theme are as varied as the potential meanings of the word ‘elements’. Some of the artworks refer to fundamental constituents of the natural world identified in ancient and medieval philosophy (earth, water, air and fire), some were inspired by weather conditions and others explored the elements of design and the meaning of ‘elements’ as a component of a larger abstract concept.
This exhibition showcases the wide range of textile art techniques that NCEATA members have not only mastered but have taken to new levels of artistry. Both traditional and contemporary materials and techniques have been used. In preparation for this exhibition, NCEATA members have stitched, embroidered, painted, printed, felted, dyed, embellished, quilted, sculpted, photographed and collaged to create textile art which is not only responsive to the theme, but will engage a wide audience.
